A Heavenly Homebrew Competition of Churches for Charity

Front Street Brewery will host a homebrew competition to bring together brewers from local churches for a charitable cause. The goal is to brew great beer and raise money for Hospice, while embodying a historical Christian attitude towards the moderate use of alcohol as a blessing from God.

Front Street’s Assistant Brewer, Christopher McGarvey, MDiv, is a recent seminary graduate and cantor at St. Basil the Great Orthodox Church. Beginning March 6, he will host a series of free beginner brewing classes on Tuesdays at the brewery, from 6 to 8 p.m. Classes will cover the basics of brewing technique and equipment, and the relationship between Christianity and brewing, in history and theology.

Church brewing teams will submit their beers to be judged in September, and the winning beer will be unveiled to the public at a grand release tapping in November.

If your church is interested in participating, or if you’re not affiliated with a church, contact us at
