  Meet the Rector

St. Paul's is pleased to announce the appointment of a new Interim Rector, the Reverend Randolph P. Green, Sr., who will take up his appointment on September 15, 2010. He comes to us from St. Andrew's by the Sea, Nags Head, NC, where he has been the Interim Rector since June 2008. His home is in Boone, NC, where he and his wife Nancy have lived for the past 24 years. His original home was Atlanta, Georgia where he attended Georgia State University before attending St. Luke's Seminary at The University of the South, Sewanee, TN.

He served Holy Innocents' Episcopal Church in Atlanta for 4 years before opening a human resources consulting business, Southeastern Management Systems, which he operated for 12 years working primarily with banks. During that time he served as a consultant to the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta and as a regular supply clergy to the parishes of that diocese.

In 1984 he joined Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse as their Corporate Director of Organization Development and later served as Corporate Employment Director. Again he served parishes in the Diocese of Western North Carolina as a regular supply clergy and consultant. He retired from Lowe's after 12 years and founded Evergreen Properties, LLC which developed golf course townhomes in Boone. Eight years ago Fr. Randy chose to reenter the full-time parish ministry as an intentional interim rector and has served The Church of the Epiphany, Eden, NC.; St. Michael's Church, Raleigh, NC; St. Paul's Church, Greenville, NC; Church of the Ascension, Hickory, NC; St. Timothy's Church in Winston-Salem, NC; and Saint Andrew's By the Sea, Nags Head.

His wife Nancy is a registered nurse and team supervisor for The American Red Cross in Winston-Salem and she will be a regular part of the church community during the interim period.

While waiting for Fr. Randy Green to take up his appointment, St. Paul's is in the very capable hands of our Substitute Rector, Fr. Richard Banks (right).

“To be a fellow sojourner in a community of faith,” is how Fr. Richard Banks defines the purpose of his ministry. “Most people regard priests as ‘finished products’ but we clergy know that we continue to grow in knowledge and faith through the weekly cycle of prayer, preparation for worship including preaching, and translating faith into works as we seek to minister to those in need.”

A native of northeast Ohio and later raised in Virginia, Fr. Richard spent twenty years in inner-city ministry as a lay person in the Dioceses of North Carolina and Maryland. He has been married for nearly 25 years to Barbara Ellington-Banks, whose career as a Foreign Service Officer took them abroad to Belize, Jamaica, and Guatemala. As a priest for 15 years, he has served parishes in Guatemala City, northern Virginia, New Orleans, and most recently Mexico before moving to Wilmington a year ago. He is fluent in Spanish.

Fr. Richard studied at Virginia Commonwealth University and the National Institute for Lay Training, and holds degrees from the University of the West Indies and the United Theological College of the West Indies. He spent two summers in the Doctor of Ministry program at The Virginia Seminary.

His son Colin lives in Portland, Oregon with his wife Jill. Daughter Alison lives in Phoenix, Arizona with husband Adam and their two small children. Both his parents and three siblings live in Richmond, Virginia with their families.
